Test the sump pump and float switch

A sump pump is most useful only if the float, discharge path and power source work before heavy moisture reaches the pit.

What typically needs to be done

  • A useful sump check verifies the pump starts and stops when the float moves, the check valve holds, and water leaves through an unobstructed discharge line.
  • The pit is checked for loose debris that could interfere with the float or intake.
  • Battery-backup systems are checked for battery condition, charger/controller status and their own test procedure.

What you can check or prepare yourself

  • Make sure stored items are not blocking access to the pit or pinning the float.
  • Use only the manufacturer-approved test method, such as adding water to the pit when appropriate, and keep hands out of a powered pit.
  • Walk outside and make sure the discharge termination is open and not sending water back toward the foundation.
  • If the pump hums without moving water, cycles repeatedly or trips a breaker, stop and have it serviced.
